How to Cut an Onion Without Crying

I usually buy sweet onions - vidalias if they're available.  Those don't cause the irritation in the eyes or sinuses when cut so I usually don't have this problem.  Sometimes that isn't an option.  I asked around and got some feedback.
One person suggested running water over them and always start cutting from the root side.
I got another suggestion to use sweet onions if possible and use a ceramic knife to cut them with.  They cut smoothly and cut without throwing juice all over.
I hope this helps.  Got any other ideas, let me know.
