Clearcutting the Sierra Nevada and A. B. 32

On September 27, 2007 A.B. 32, the Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006 was signed into law by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.  This was a good thing for California’s forests too but recently the way it’s being put into action is being challenged by the timber interests.  Please read the following editorial from the Sacramento Bee by Deanna Lynn Wulf.

Viewpoints: Clear-cutting forests is wrong way for state to lead on climate policy

California trees have changed my life. I first came to know them as a little girl hiking with my family, then as a seasonal waitress in Yosemite, and finally, as a ranger in Sequoia-Kings Canyon National Park.
Nowhere else in the world will you find dry, soothing afternoon winds, regular 80-degree days, loamy soft soil, abundant rivers, pristine alpine lakes and big, beautiful trees sugar pines, firs, cedars, hemlocks, redwoods, sequoias and more. To walk among these giants is to walk into a living cathedral.
Four out of five of the world's tallest tree species live in the Golden State.
I became so enchanted by them that I decided to make my home in the mountains, and my boyfriend and I mapped out a journey to explore the state's forests and nearby towns.
We went all the way to the Warner Range near Alturas, in the far northeastern corner of the state, where we spent a rainy night under a picnic table, trying to stay dry and warm. We were just out of graduate school, we didn't even own a tent, and my car's "check engine" light blinked red for the entire journey.
But that wasn't the problem.
Town after town, forest after forest, I came to understand that clear-cutting is still legal. Like many people, I assumed that the practice had long ago been banned. Sometimes a beauty strip was left near the road, but I'd get out and run past it, right into a burnt swath of earth unlikely to recover for decades.
Upset, I went home, wrote some letters, joined some advocacy groups and swore off paper towels. But I never did go back. Who would?
Today and at last, California is posed to do something grand for its trees and the communities that live near them.
As part of the global warming bill, AB 32, the state has put together a carbon trading system to limit greenhouse gas emissions. Originally, only healthy forests and ecosystems could be counted as carbon credits. (Trees absorb carbon as they grow.) Timber companies, by keeping their forests intact, could trade credit to refineries and other major polluters to help them meet their emission limits.
Companies could profit by keeping their trees standing, and that's a good idea.
So what's the problem? Sierra Pacific Industries, which owns 1.9 million acres of California land, lobbied for changes in the carbon offset program. Specifically, the company pushed for even-age management practices, which is a fancy term for clear-cutting and replanting. It paid $37,500 to California Strategies, a Sacramento lobbying firm, to present its case and policy adjustments were made.
Yet, clear-cutting works against the goals of the carbon offset program.
"Planting a monoculture (or single species) of tree is an unproductive way to sequester carbon," says Dr. Malcolm North, a restoration specialist with the U.S. Forest Service. "The best way to store carbon is to mimic a forest's original condition." Monocultures can also be unstable; they are more easily consumed in a fire, and they are more vulnerable to bark beetles and other pathogens.
Mixed-age forests, on the other hand, are resilient, and they support an abundance of plant and animal life, providing homes for birds, bears and squirrels and enriching streams that sustain fish. Salmon, for example, need clean gravel, constant water temperature and pools for spawning, and trees nurture their habitat. Redwood Creek in Muir Woods National Monument is one of the last streams in California with native salmon, due largely to the undisturbed forest.
Selective cutting and care also lends itself to long-term jobs. An expert logger is a well-paid, skilled laborer who could have sustainable work for life under the right conditions.
Decimating the land, cutting jobs and sending another species to the endangered list is dire for all of us. Yet there is still time to sway the Air Resources Board to choose the right policy.
The Climate Action Reserve, a national offset program that aims to ensure integrity in the U.S. carbon market, is holding a workshop at 1 p.m. today in Sacramento on the state's forest protocols, and is accepting written comments until March 25. Add your input at policy@climateactionreserve.org. Deanna Lynn Wulff is a freelance writer and a seasonal ranger and river guide.

I believe there are right ways and wrong ways to log.  Clear cutting is a wrong way whether it’s in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Cascades or anywhere else.  Not too long ago I was on a flight from Seattle to Denver.  It was a clear day and I was looking forward to my flight over the Cascades.  There were clear cuts in close proximity to each other as far as the eye could see.  This ruined my trip over the Cascades.  Logging can be done responsibly.  There are two certifications of logging.  They both have a name that sounds good but they are not the same.  One is Forest Stewardship Council Certification (FSC) and then there’s Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) certification.  Only the FSC is truly sustainable.  I barrowed some pictures from the Sierra Club Mother Lode Chapter to show an example of each.  The first one is taken of a Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) forest.  Things have been cut there but much of the forest was left standing.   The second one is at an SFI site.  There’s a big difference.  SFI certification may have some good practices but it allows clearcuts.
Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)

Sustainable Forest Initiative (SFI)

To take action:
If you live in California, please contact your legislator and tell him or her to oppose or reverse the policies that are being pushed by Sierra Pacific Industries that allow even age management practices, in other words clearcutting and replanting.  Tell him or her to support the legalization of industrial non-GMO hemp.  Hemp could provide much of the items that our forests are providing without the damage to the environment.
To find your legislator go to the following site.
If you do not live in California, please pass this on to someone who does.
No matter where you live there are things you can do to help.  Contact your lawmakers on both state and federal level and ask him or her to support the legalization of industrial non-GMO hemp.
When purchasing lumber, look for the FSC label.
When doing your grocery shopping, try to purchase items in large quantities to reduce the amount of packaging that gets used.
For other ideas on how to reduce the “need” for logging or just to lighten your footprint, please send me an email and enter “clearcutting the Sierra” in the subject line.

No Matter What the Kids Think....

No matter what our kids and the new
generation think about us,
WE ARE AWESOME !!!!
OUR LIFE IS LIVING PROOF !!!!
To Those of Us Born
1930 - 1979
At the end of this
email is a quote of the month by Jay Leno. If you don't read anything else, please
read what he said.
Very well stated,
Mr. Leno..
TO ALL THE KIDS
WHO SURVIVED THE
1930's, 40's,
50's,
60's and 70's!!
First, we survived
being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they were pregnant.
They took aspirin,
ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can and didn't get tested for diabetes.
Then after that
trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs covered
with bright colored
lead-base paints.
We had no childproof
lids on medicine bottles, locks on doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes,
we had baseball caps
not helmets on our heads.
As infants &
children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, no booster seats, no seat belts,
no air bags, bald tires and sometimes no brakes.
Riding in the back
of a pick- up truck on a warm day was always a special treat.
We drank water
from the garden hose and not from a bottle.
We shared one soft
drink with four friends, from one bottle and no one actually died from this.
We ate cupcakes
made with Lard, white bread, real butter and bacon. We drank
FLAV- OR- AID
made with real white sugar. And, we weren't overweight. WHY?
Because we were
always outside playing....that's why!
We would leave
home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on..
No one was able
to reach us all day. And, we were OKAY.
We would spend
hours building our go-carts out of scraps
and then ride
them down the hill,
only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem
We did not have
Play stations, Nintendo's and X-boxes. There were no video games, no 150 channels
on cable, no video movies or DVD's,
no surround-sound
or CD's,
no cell phones,
no personal computers,
no Internet and
no chat rooms.
WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!
We fell out of
trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents.
We would get spankings
with wooden spoons, switches, ping pong paddles, or just a bare hand and no one
would call child services to report abuse.
We ate worms and mud pies
made from dirt, and
the worms did not live in us forever.
We were given BB
guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and tennis balls and, although
we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes.
We rode bikes
or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just
walked in and talked to them.
Little League had
tryouts and not everyone made the team.
Those who didn't had to learn
to deal with disappointment.
Imagine that!!
The idea of a parent bailing us out
if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!
These generations
have produced some of the best
risk-takers, problem
solvers and inventors ever.
The past 50 years
have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.
What can kids today
do besides push buttons..
We had freedom,
failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all.
If YOU are one of them, CONGRATULATIONS!
You might want to
share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers
and the government regulated so much of our lives for our own good.
While you are at it,
forward it to your kids so they will know how brave and lucky their parents were.
Kind of makes
you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn't it ?
~
The quote of the month is by
Jay Leno:
'With hurricanes,
tornados, fires out of control, mud slides, flooding, severe thunderstorms tearing
up the country from one end to another, and with the threat of bird flu and terrorist
attacks, are we sure this is a good time to take God out of the Pledge of Allegiance?'
For those that prefer
to think that God is not watching over us....go ahead and delete this.
For the rest of
us...pass this on.
Have a beautiful day
all!!!!

Hows your job going? That bad?

Erica Hill talks to Jen Groover, entrepreneur & author of "What If? and Why Not?: How to Transform Your Fears Into Action and Start the Business of Your Dreams" about ready-to-go companies that require a minimal investment of money.

The only requirements are that you be at least 18 and have a willingness to put in the time.  You don’t have to wait until you’re at least 30.  You don’t even have to wait until you’re done with college. Unless you’re dead or to a point where it’s time to move into assisted living, it’s not too late to start now.  Take a look at the following link and give this some serious thought.
Think about this and answer the questions to yourself.  Be honest with yourself.  You’re the one you need to answer to, not me:
How is your present work situation working out for you?
How stable is your work situation?
Are things going on in your present workplace that make you uncomfortable?
Is your present work situation taking you where you want to go in life?
Are you happy just getting by?
Do you have enough free time right now?
Would you be interested in setting yourself up so you don’t have to look for a job again?

Got Future Missionaries?

Do you know anyone with plans to serve a mission for their church who's at least 18?  A son or daughter?  A friend?  Maybe you?  This is a very worthy cause but it can be very pricy depending on where he or she goes.  Does he or she have enough money saved?  Maybe their church will pick up the difference and maybe it won't.  That depends on which church he or she will be serving the mission for.  What if there was a possibility of totally funding it without any help from the church?  How would that feel?  Maybe some valuable skills could be learned that would be helpful on a mission.  If I could show a way to do that, would it be worth 20 minutes of your time?  If you would like to know more, shoot me an email.

Got Kids who are College Bound or Just Moving Out?

So the day has come that your son or daughter is moving out and going to college or just moving out.  It is part of growing up but you probably have mixed feelings about having your "baby" leaving the nest.  There are many stories about college age kids coming back about a month or so later with every article of clothing dirty to wash all their clothes at dad and moms place.  I have a way to start them off right with cleaning and laundry supplies and even some of the best nutrition available.  It might seem like a lot of money but some of this stuff will last a long time, much longer then the store bought equivalent.  Your son or daughter will have no excuse for not doing laundry or taking not care of their health.  Use of these products may even eliminate some allergies.

This would be a great package for kids who are going to be serving missions for their church too.
Let me know if you're interested in the 15% discount.

Concerned about Hearing Loss? Read this!

Read this if you are interested in a solution for hearing loss.

Today I went in for my yearly hearing aid check up at the audiologist. He said that it has been a number of years since I had a hearing test and this is especially important considering my age. After the tests were completed he compared the results today with the previous tests. He said he didn't understand why the results of today's testing were so out of line with my previous tests. Then he showed me the comparison. He said my tests today showed my hearing to be ABOVE the "normal" line whereas my previous tests showed all my scores to be way BELOW the "normal" range.

He said this can't be because no one has ever had this much improvement in their hearing in all the years he has been in this business. He said that something isn't right, no one has this dramatic improvement in hearing and especially considering your age. Then I told him that I felt sure I had
the explanation for the improvement - it's Vivix. Then I briefly told him what this product is and the testimonials Shaklee has received of vastly improved health because of this product. That it is so unique Shaklee has applied for patents. I asked him if he'd like me to drop off information and science about this product. He said "yes".

MY EXPERIENCE WITH PURCHASING DOCUMENTS TO GO

The other day I tried to purchase Documents to Go so I would not have to wait until I get to my computer to do all my writing.  For some odd reason my card was declined.  I checked the card and account and found that both card and the account were fine and there was no evidence of maintenance on the account.  I still got a receipt of purchase but there was no charge and I was unable to download and even try it.  I tried to get a refund and  then I tried to repurchase but I got a warning that I won't be able get another refund if I made the purchase.  I was also asked to sign in to Google and I wasn't able to do that either.  I was asked to enter some other security code along with my PIN#.  I tried several times to enter the security code as it was shown but each time I was asked to enter it again.   I hope I've given a good enough description.  Since Im not a techie, I don't know how to describe this any better.  I tried to get in touch with someone and found there was nobody to get in touch with. It has to be handled by email and it looks like this mess is going to take a couple of days to get cleaned up.  If I can give Documents to Go a try without jumping through any more hoops Id like that but if there's no quick solution I'm not interested.  I'm prepared to recognize this as another one of my many bad experiences with my DROID 2.

I sent the above statement to DataViz on 3/21/11 and got the response that "In general we try to respond within three business days."  I guess this is someone's sick idea of good service.

Dougs-Pepper-Paste

Dougs-Pepper-Paste

Grind up using an electric mixer (shown below), blender or juicer (electric mixer recommended) a mixture of a handful of serrano peppers, a half a handful of habanero peppers, cajun spice, and about a ½  cup of malt vinegar or buffalo sauce and Sriracha hot chile sauce
Measurements aren’t precise.

Electric hand mixer

NOTE
There will be some strong fumes while this is being mixed and during the clean-up.  Whatever is used to mix this and whatever comes in contact with the peppers will have to be cleaned well or whatever is made next using these items may be tainted with heat.  If a juicer or blender is used, make sure it can be taken apart for cleaning.  This is my recommendation for a cleaner.  It will even take the ” heat” off of your hands so face and eyes can safely be touched.   Dish Wash Concentrate.

Age is not a question of years. It is a question with how you deal with those years. To heck with yesterday! What’s doing tomorrow? You are at the beginning!

Do you think the pharmaceutical companies are out for your benefit? NOT!!!

Do you think the pharmaceutical companies are there for your benefit?  Listen closely to these TV ads that are pushing these "miracle drugs."  Some of the side effects sound almost as bad as what the drug is supposed to be curing.  Don't take my word for it.  Here's someone who used to market these miracle drugs.  Please go to this link.
If you would like to find out how you can be more proactive with your health, send me an email.  I have some information for you.
